Counseling for Anxiety

Everyone worries and feels nervous sometimes, but true anxiety is much more intense and physically distressing. Anxiety does not have easy answers that you can self-talk your way out of because the logical part of your brain has signed off.

If you struggle with anxiety, your brain and your body respond in a way that signals that you are in danger, even though most of the time you know that you are not.  There is HOPE that the symptoms can be lessened, managed and even overcome -but it is hard work.

As a Registered Psychotherapist I can help you. In therapy, it is important to find the root causes for the intense anxiety you are experiencing and relearn how to respond in a different way.

Traditional therapies such as CBT work well in the later stages of counselling, after you have learned how to turn off the survival response of Fight or Flight. In the beginning, we will work from a neuro-biological perspective to soothe your central nervous system, build your sense of security and trust in yourself, in God and the therapeutic process. With your permission, we can incorporate contemplative prayer, practices of silence and solitude, and scriptural meditations into your sessions. All of these encounters with God can be powerfully healing.

If you do not want to integrate Christian faith into our sessions that is ok too! I have been trained in mindfulness techniques that reduce anxiety; you can still benefit from guided imagery, grounding techniques and other helpful therapies that will help you to externalize the anxious thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations.

Together we can learn new skills, gain new insights, and ultimately help you experience freedom from debilitating anxiety.
